!! oh my god !!

did anyone else know that, as a male, in order to apply for a federal student loan you have to register with the selective service (ie draft)?

that kind of freaks me out.

although I guess everyone is supposed to register for that anyway, but it's still kind of weird.

the translation for this job posting.

“We are looking for two developers with experience with MS SQL / ASP/.NET. You must be a code eating geek lacking any social interface whatsoever, and you must burn for programming. You need some experience, but lots of brains and talent outweigh lack of it. You may skip the usual bullshit about “sensitive, adaptable, good team worker” et c.

The IT boss is a mad despot who dislikes free time, friends or other attempts of having any kind of life outside of the computer. Do NOT call to apply for the job – only mail applications will be taken into account. Feel free to prove links to sample work or other references.”

the onion's av-club (the 'serious' side) interviews steven colbert. He talks about the inspiration for the set design, never thought about it beyond, 'hey, thats a cool set' but he claims everything in the room points at him.

the story about the clown with the gambling problem. really touching.

interview with the industrial designer of the U.S. Nintendo Entertainment System (you should all aspire to make such beautiful grey bricks, I sure do :P)

I think that is what he was trying to get at, but he didn't leave any rules for what direction meant what. perhaps a voting system that defined the layout? OH GOD I HAVE BEEN DOING TO MUCH GRAPHIC DESIGN!

did they light bonfires in the crowd?

wouldn't it be cooler if the direction/layout of the post was dictated by what sort of response was contained within it?

like:

- disagreeing posts go to the right and down, opening up the way for more responses
(and agreeing posts go to the left and down)
- joke posts go off to the side somewhere
- etc
- etc
- etc

hmmmm it makes sense in my head.

basically all that forum does is let you decide wether you are going to post to the right of or below any given post on the page (just as long as that direction has not already been taken by another post). Thinking about it more, it is the technical limitations that really get in the way of it being cool.

what's the horizontal axis in the 2d forum? I didn't get it just by looking at it...

"Contrary to popular belief, Chuck Norris, not the box jellyfish of northern Australia, is the most venomous creature on earth. Within 3 minutes of being bitten, a human being experiences the following symptoms: fever, blurred vision, beard rash, tightness of the jeans, and the feeling of being repeatedly kicked through a car windshield."

"tightness of the jeans" sounds positively awful!
