The Wire-Simpsons.

An excellent post from Rustbelt Intellectual.

Old but good from Salon.

"Wade quotes a devastating passage from Friedrich List, the 19th century German economist: "It is a very clever common device that when anyone has attained the summit of greatness, he kicks away the ladder by which he has climbed up, in order to deprive others of the means of climbing up after him ... Any nation which by means of protective duties and restrictions on navigation has raised her manufacturing power and her navigation to such a degree of development that no other nation can sustain free competition with her, can do nothing wiser than to throw away these ladders of her greatness, to preach to other nations the benefits of free trade, and to declare in penitent tones that she has hitherto wandered in the paths of error, and has now for the first time succeeded in discovering the truth.""

Hei hei fra partymode.no!

I'm here in Bergen, which I've learned is one of the rainiest cities in the world. It's an awesome town, though, despite the constant rain and $20 pints (no, really). it's particularly beautiful seen from a free four star hotel room! :)

That's an interesting quote, though, eli. I think it also applies to environmental codes. I think new industrial countries in the middle east and asia get pretty annoyed when western countries try to impose environmental laws on them, since they all got to where there are today (economically) by being the most polluting nations the world has ever seen...it's easy for us to see the light and the error of our ways now, from our comfy spot on the top of the economic ladder...

right. wish me luck on my presentation tomorrow.

I don't know if I'd agree with the comparison between trade policy and environmental protections, Yann. The process of free trade may also undermine labor or environmental protections that the residents of developing nations may themselves want to enact.

And as an aside, again from How the World Works.

"For the fifth straight year, the world champion export nation is Germany. A country boasting high wages, a robustly valued euro, and strong environmental laws. In 2007, Germany exported $1.327 trillion dollars worth of goods; China, $1.218; and the U.S, $1.163."

i agree with yann (and wish him luck on his presentation!), but on the other hand, we didn't always know or realize what we were doing at the time. i think its good to ask other countries to develop with environmental concerns in mind because right now we are stuck with a crappy infrastructure thats so entangled with inefficiencies that no one wants to say they'll be the first to change.

developing countries should try their best so have high environmental standards, but we'll need to tighten up our own standards at the same time.

eli, i'm not sure that i trust that last quote, because they say that germany is number so it must be feasible to pay high wages and be environmentally conscious and still be number 1. first off, it doesn't take in to consideration who else is on the top 10 list.

and second, this is kind of the thoreau "walden" situation. there can be successful deviants from the system, but everyone can't be a successful deviant. not unless walmart is going to start carrying bmw bags of rice.
