party shout

dudes - do any of you listen to Subtle? I went to a show tonight to see the opener, Black Moth Super Rainbow (who are awesome and hail from round pgh) and the headliner was this dude and his band, subtle.

it didn't at first strike me as a great pairing for bands - black moth is more of a psychedelic feel, and subtle is sortof political, lyrically complicated instrumental pieces - but they worked together alright. they both have heavy mostly analog-sounding electronic components that play nice with a really rich band setup - flute, tenor sax, upright bass, along with all the usual bass and drums and whatnot.

just seein if anyone else listened and what you thought :)

Wow, yeah, that is an unorthodox pairing there... I've never heard subtle before, but from the single I'm hearing now, it's enticing. "Serious party music," perhaps. Somehow they seem ready to be the soundtrack for a dance party, yet there's clearly a serious tone, especially to the vocals. Neat!

I think it's safe to say that the partymode PGH residents all enjoy some Black Moth now and then! Their newest album's been on loop in my headphones at work, the past few days. Although I think they semi-ruined my favorite of their live songs (Drippy Eye) in the process of recording it. Incidentally, the drummer works at the bakery counter in Whole Foods, and will sell you a tasty fruit tort.

ahaha, that's awesome! I feel like whole foods is competing with starbucks as Nebulous But Mostly Not Evil Low Pressure Employer of Artists Etc.
I think 'serious party music' is the perfect genre for Subtle. I saw more dancing at his relatively small show than I have at any other boston show - and this was INTENSE dancing. seems like the type of music that polarizes folks, and those that end up on the 'for' side might be that much for rabid because of it.

I AM SO PSYCHED FOR AWESOMEFEST! I was just listening to Big Apple Rappin, gleaned from the last time I saw you guys - I think that was around winter of last year? we should share around musics again :)

Likewise! Extremely excited!!! Onny, get your MP3 library ready for the guests...

Whoah. And now for some roadkill.

speaking of music sharing... maybe i am the only one who is excited about the fact that alanis morrisette is coming out with another album, and she is angry again. Breakup angry. Which is the best kind.

I was going to ask if that video was a documentary until they got to the pool scene with the baboon. I'd never really listened to BMSR before and definitely enjoyed that track. Maybe I could raid some music collections while we are in Pittsburgh? I feel like I have been listening to alot of Pandora, very few albums.

Most definitely! Onny's MP3s, especially, are rich & plentiful for raiding.

Check out this partymode mixtape from a couple of weeks ago -- BMSR are at the very beginning.
