you know, if everyone were good at design, we wouldn't have jobs.

also, the rewards/consequences title is perfect.

onny posted 5 months ago

hahah, that was my favorite page as well.

JonBro posted 5 months ago

I am actually kinda tearing up.

goodbye colloquial web design...

hahaha...

also, best headline ever... great catch!

onny posted 5 months ago

geez. that reminds me of the first website I made in notepad, my dad's faculty page at PSU. oof.

also, the video on that Warcart page is tops.

hmmm is it sad that i look at sites like these and wonder if they are meant to be ironic?

Then i wonder which is worse? Designing a site like that for realz or for irony.

Cuz you know that in 2020 if the internet still exists sites like this will be "retro" and the yougins will think it is really hip.

Semi-related awesome infographic at the bottom of this NOAA page.

Zach posted 5 months ago

you know, agata and zach, that website reminds me of the cupcakes i made last week. i looked up a recipe on the internet... i wasn't sure what was the best one--there were so many--but i picked one that looked good to me. i mixed the ingredients--i was missing a couple, but i substituted as best i could. when they came out, sure, they were kinda flopping to one side, and the icing looked terrible, but they did their job (they tasted alright) and i really enjoyed the process of making them!

i'm curious if the people at the vanilla bean pastry studio would wonder whether the crappy cupcakes i baked myself last week were for real or just ironic cupcakes.

give that teacher a break. do you think she's got a budget to hire a designer?

onny posted 5 months ago

hahaha. i know... its after i ask the real v.s. irony question that i THEN question how mean/stuckup/snobby am i?

i guess you answered that for me ;)

I wanna make cupcakes!

agata posted 5 months ago

i agree! we can settle this with MORE CUPCAKES!! :) they do bring us all together.

sorry, if that post came off as too harsh.

onny posted 5 months ago

haha thx onny, I couldn't have said this better.

I think the teacher and her website should be celebrated for her diy ethic!

JonBro posted 5 months ago

p.s. Amy Sedaris's cupcake recipe

because we love everything to do with the Sedaris family, so why not their cupcakes too?

agata posted 5 months ago

i clicked on the rewards/consequences page first too. does that say something about us?

Yann posted 5 months ago

also like the website, onny's cupcakes were on fire on top. and I think I spotted a farkle.

yann, partymode is the internet's perpetual waiting area for the principal's office!

i'm late on the irony conversation.... oh no!

irony is actually one of the reasons i felt like i needed to leave new york('s art scene). no one seems to actually like anything anymore.

rather than coolhunting (being awesome enough to know when something was on its way in... silly enough as that is), people dedicated themselves to irony hunting: knowing when you are better than something (even if that something is a moustache attached to your own face)

when it infects art, it becomes even worse. rather than enjoying a piece for what it is, you have to scrutinize it to find the point where the artist winks a "but not really" back at you.

enough ranting for now, i'm off to the mojave spaceport!

josh.er posted 5 months ago

take pictures josh!

remember irony is an illusion

JonBro posted 5 months ago

Good job getting that phrase on record, Jbro.

Josh, that was so clearly and honestly stated. Avoiding the vulnerability that such honesty carries is the prime directive of those indulging in constant irony.

especially that alanis morissette ! f her! wait... now i'm the hole.

anyway, all i'm saying is we could really sell a lot of "just say no to irony" t-shirts to hipsters.

onny posted 5 months ago

wait, but wouldn't hipsters be wearing them ironically?

Andrea posted 5 months ago

yes, but we would be unironically making money.

JonBro posted 5 months ago

actually i think we would ironically be making money

doh!

agata posted 5 months ago

Sorry to interrupt, but here's more fodder for the debate. Check out the .gif in the corner

In my opinion, exploiting cultural trends for profit is not ironic. Cynical, yes. Hilarious, yes. But never, ever ironic.

sweet gif!! "in the old middle school library" makes it seem like they closed the library for this cyber cafe.
