Another awful idea from the poor losers in the record industry:

"SlotMusic"

New Kids on the Block are considered current pop-music? How did I not know that?

How can you be a loser if you have "SlotMusic" in your life?

And don't be too sympathetic for Wal-Mart... they do have an exclusive distribution deal for AC/DC's new album which I'm sure will be great.

OMG i am not the only person who posts wsj articles on pmode. WOOT! Also i have always been tempted to by SanDisk stock, but this idea seems a bit temporary. Kinda like sony's minidiscs?

NO WAY MD IS FOREVER!

but seriously, I am done with physical media for real. I just need to move on that for my personal practice.

I think records are going to outlast every other format. They're more archival, a more satisfying object, and have nice big album art. Only problem is that vinyl is petroleum, and if petroleum gets too expensive no one is going to press records. Maybe someone will come up with some alternate material, but I don't think it's a top priority at the DuPont Labs.

this has the added advantage of generating repeat buyers. "shit, i lost the timberlake micro-SD card again!"

aren't memory cards (far) more expensive than CDs? and far far more expensive than digital downloads? why are the record companies increasing their distribution costs?

IIRC the last time SanDisk tried this in 2005 (look up "Gruvi") I think an album/card cost around $30 but they also crammed a whole bunch of other media on there as well. Apparently they didn't get the message.
