I thought the Tufte appointment felt a bit gimmicky.

eli.pousson posted 4 months ago

really?

so it is ok for 3rd parties to produce their own information propagraphics, but not the government?

I am not surprised at all that he was appointed, I am just confused as to why it took this long.

Not at all. I love all the infographic work the Obama administration has been doing. I'd just question what real contribution Tufte can make from this advisory panel. I suppose the point of these panels is just to get folks to recognize that you are making a commitment, rather than doing work.

I agree that it's 'gimmicky' to appoint the top recognized expert in the land to fix the info architecture of the administration's internal reports and their public transparency materials, when really any smart & dedicated Tufte acolyte would do (and would probably even be better, considering Tufte's likely overcommitment). But I guess that is what you're expected to do, when you're the president. Appoint Albert fricking Einstein to spend five minutes a month marginally improving the safety standards in nuclear power plants.

You guys are missing the point (for you). Look. Political advertising is huge. $1 billion was spent on political advertising in 2009, and it wasn't even an election year. Forget what Tufte will do. Appointing Tufte is a sign that it's time for graphic designers to get on this gravy train. TOOT TOOT! Forget Illustrator--it's time to learn Quicken because the money is going to be a-flowin'. Also, it's a sign of what is important to think about--look at the other people on the list: bankers, management people, the Kennedy School of Government. You guys are in now.

Or, let me put it in a way that graphically-oriented people can understand:

Hahahahaha, that depth gauge is hilarious. Was he really just waiting for it to hit 90ft, or do you think he has a whole set?

Yes, I think this does mean that designers are actually 'in', on a certain level. Combined with the toehold that the Design for Democracy project has on US voting ballots, this is kind of a cool moment. I do have to point out, though, that Tufte is really a political and computer scientist, and a graphic designer only by implication. Sort of like how Herb Simon sort of counted as an industrial design / architecture theorist.

Maybe I can use this as leverage to finally convince my editors that we should use sparklines.

They are adamantly against them and I have been hoping to use them for two years now. Maybe i will finally get my way!

Seems like a good place to post this helpful info graphic:

Agata, good luck, but remember that the WSJ editorial board typically is not in favor of things Obama does. ;)

Remember this?
